Watsons Building Services Ltd were appointed to design and install the mechanical & electrical services installations for the refurbishment of the Grade II Listed Church and Church House in Ilkley. The project also included a new glazed link corridor which forms the new entrance into the church and is designed to be used as a welcoming area where exhibitions can be set up either as part of or separately to the main church building. As part of the works a new commercial kitchen has been installed in church house, together with a meeting space and toilet facilities.
Mechanical services included new boiler plant with BMS controls, underfloor heating, public health services, mechanical ventilation.
As the Church worship area floor was being completely renewed, it was an ideal opportunity to install underfloor heating which provided the most efficient and aesthetically pleasing form of heating. Ancillary areas and the choir area of church are heated by a number of radiators and pipe coils around the pews.
The new link building lent itself to being heated by underfloor heating leading to a nice clean crisp finish.
Church house was heated by a separate boiler plant via a number of radiators. Public health services along with mechanical ventilation were provided to the offices, toilets and kitchen areas.
Electrical services included mains electrical distribution, lighting, small power, IT and communications cabling, fire alarm, intruder alarm and interpretive lighting to the main church and link.
Lighting to emphasise specific elements of interest within the church was partly funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund. All services have been installed concealed and in sympathy with the features of this Grade II listed building.
Dimmable LED lighting was installed with scene setting controls which allow the church to seamlessly change between modes suitable for services, conferences, exhibitions and a heritage visitor centre.

South Parade is an evangelical, Bible-based church, which belongs to the Baptist Union of Great Britain and the Yorkshire Baptist Association. The present formal membership stands at around 350 and covers a wide age-range. There is a total estimated church community of between 600-700 people. The wide variety of people in the church is reflected in the worship styles and ways of meeting.
Watsons Building Services Ltd were invited to tender for the removal and replacement of the old gas fired boiler plant and controls. The boiler plant served a mixture of old cast iron radiators, steel panel radiators, pipe coils and underfloor heating systems all serving the existing church and its ancillary rooms.
Watsons worked closely with Vaillant boilers to design and install a suitable rig that would fit into the tight constraints of the existing Plant room. The new boiler system was installed including all new pump circuits to connect to each existing zone.
The installation was carried out during the summer months without any major disruption to the day to day operations of the church and its staff.
The installation was completed on time and within budget.
